Alopecia Areata Treatment – Kitchener Waterloo
Alopecia areata is a disease that develops when the body attacks its own hair follicles (where hair grows from), this unfortunately can cause hair loss anywhere on the body. Many people who develop alopecia areata develop a round or oval bald patch on their scalp.
Patients that develop Alopecai Areata are otherwise healthy and well individuals. They could have hair loss, but otherwise are in good health.
The hair loss with alopecia areata can come and go, and can be unpredictable. With no treatment the hair may regrow if the follicle has not been destroyed, but in some cases it can be permanent once the follicle has died. Fortunately there is treatment that can help if done early. If someone has only a few bald patches and they are small then that is the time to seek out treatment.
When does alopecia areata usually begin?
Alopecia areata can start at any age, but it usually starts in childhood or the teenage years. Lucky patients can see spots resolve alone and hair completely regrow within 12 months, but some need help with injections.
How to treat Alopecia Areata?
The best way to treat Alopecia Areata is with injection with triamcinolone (kenalog) directly into the area of alopecia. This helps calms the immune system down and stop it from attacking the hair follicles.
Triamcinolone (Kenalog) is a well known steroid solution that has been used as a treatment for alopecia areata for over 50 years. Kenalog is administered via injection into the scalp and appears to have some efficacy for patients with mild to moderate alopecia areata.
Types of alopecia areata
There are different types and level of Alopecia. When talking about treatment, your doctor may mention the type of alopecia areata that you have.
The main types are:
Alopecia areata: Alopecia means bald, and areata means patchy. The patchy baldness can develop anywhere on the bady – scalp, beard, eyebrows, eyelashes, armpits, anywhere.
Alopecia totalis: This rare form causes the patient to lose all of the hair on the scalp. They become totally bald.
Alopecia universalis: This rare form causes the patient to lose all the hair on their entire body.
