What is Belkyra?
Belkyra (known as Kybella) in the United States is an injectable lipo (fat) dissolver for double chin fat (submental – beneath the chin).
Belkyra can redefine your jawline, and eliminate double chin without the need for surgery.
Belkyra is a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring acid within the body. When deoxycholic acid is injected into areas of fat it will help breakdown the cellular membrane, allowing the body to eliminate the fat from the body.
All treatments are injected by our Cosmetic Physician Dr. Rayhaan Dawood MD CCFP.

Chin fat or double chin (also called submental fullness) is a concern for many patients. Over half of the population suffers from this condition. 67% of people report an aesthetic concern over fat in this area of the body. And there is a common misconception that this issue only occurs in overweight individuals.
Poor genetics, weight gain, and aging can all lead to increased fat deposits under the jaw, leading to poor confidence, and even embarrassment. Fat in this area is stubborn and is often resistant to both exercise and healthy eating.
In past years, the only solution was surgical removal or liposuction. Belkyra, also known as Kybella in the United States, is a non-surgical injectable treatment for double chin correction.
Don’t trust anyone with your treatments, trust Kitchener Waterloo Cosmetic Clinic and Dr. Rayhaan Dawood. Other treatments may also be recommended to complement your Belkyra treatment at Kitchener Waterloo Cosmetic Clinic, The premier cosmetic clinic and medical spa of Kitchener Waterloo. Dermal Fillers, Botox, Chemical Peels, Medical Grade Skincare, and other treatments may be advised.

Belkyra for Double Chin Removal:
Fullness under the chin can detract from an otherwise harmonious facial profile. This leads to a heavier, older look, and can cause poor self-esteem and a negative self-impression. The condition affects adults of all ages, and occurs in both women and men. Belkyra is a simple non-surgical injectable treatment that can be done in less than an hour in office. It is FDA and Health Canada approved for treating double chin/chin fat (submental fullness). Belkyra is injected just under the chin, allowing it to break down fat cells over several weeks. In one or more sessions, you will notice an improvement in jaw line contour and sharpness.
There are many options for fat loss including diet, exercise, liposuction, radiofrequency, ultrasound therapy, and body contouring devices. Belkyra, however, is one of the most effective options for fat loss in the submental (lower jaw/chin) region. Fat in this region is stubborn and not responsive to classical dietary and exercise approaches. The procedure is also well tolerated, and avoids the pain, cost, and invasiveness of many of the other options. Belkyra is also one of the only clinically validated methods via rigorous clinical study to reduce submental fullness. The key to effective Belkyra treatment is having it done by a certified medical doctor.
Belkyra Downtime, Recovery and Side Effects
The chance of any severe issues or complications is minimal, however, all possible risks will be reviewed prior to your treatment. Belkyra is a well-tolerated procedure, and the most common side effects are minimal.
Most commonly patients will have swelling post-treatment. This side effect happens in most cases and is temporary. Some bruising, itchiness, redness, and general mild discomfort can occur. After a few days, most side effects will settle. Some numbness or tingling can also be felt in the area of injection in rare cases. If this does occur, it will settle within two months.
We do recommend most patients get their treatments are done as close to the weekend, or time off from work so the swelling won’t be noticed by others.
Some patients also experience numbness or tenderness in the targeted area, in some cases for up to two months.
BELKYRA™ Treatment Candidates
The best patient candidates for BELKYRA™ injectable treatment are those who have exhausted classical weight-loss strategies. If you are someone who has already tried diet and exercise and still struggle with a stubborn double chin that will not go away, then treatment may be for you. Often times a double chin is not just due to overall body weight or diet, or exercise. There are genetics, hereditary, and hormonal factors that contribute.
If you are someone that is tired of a stubborn double chin, then you may be a good candidate for treatment.
Patient’s over the age of 18 that are in good physical health, at a health BMI, and do have appropriate and reasonable expectations about treatment are the best candidates for BELKYRA™ treatment.

What is Belkyra?
Belkyra / Kybella injections contain deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule that breaks down fat cell membranes. Once broken, the fat cell contents are easily digested by the body, resulting in permanently destroyed fat cells. After injecting Belkyra, your fat cells beneath the jaw will begin to breakdown, leading to reduced double chin (submental fullness). This will restore a sharp jaw line and refine your facial appearance. Belkyra is a safe and effective method to improve facial contour while avoiding unnecessary surgery.
Can You Dissolve Fat in other areas of the body with Belkyra?
Belkyra is currently only approved for submental fat reduction
Who Can’t Get Belkyra?
Pregnant or breastfeeding women can not get Belkyra treatment. Patients with severe medical conditions of the kidney and liver are also excluded from treatment. Patients with excessive skin and muscle laxity are not good candidates.
Is Belkyra treatment safe?
Belkyra is Health Canada approved. All treatments do carry risk, however, Belkyra risk is lower than that of a surgical procedure. And when done in the hands of an expert injector the risks are minimized. Our team will review all risks of treatment at your consultation. Rare complications can include: swallowing difficulty, nerve injury, and change in facial expression.
Is Belkyra treatment painful?
Most patients experience minimal discomfort. And with topical numbing cream, you will almost feel nothing at all.
What are the other options for treatment?
Options include: Doing Nothing, Belkyra, Surgical Procedures, Diet and Exercise
Complementary treatments that may be recommended: Botox, Fillers, Microneedling, Facials, Aquagold
What about loose skin?
Belkyra will not address loose skin. Other treatments may be recommended to help complement Belkyra
Is Belkyra right for me?
Every patient requires a consultation to determine if Belkyra is an option for you. But if you suffer from double chin, and unwanted fat in the lower jaw region then Belkyra injections may be a great non-surgical option. Even individuals that eat right and exercise hard may still find great difficulty in losing stubborn fat in this area of the body. Belkyra may not be an option if you have an active infection in the submental (beneath jaw) region. Belkyra is also not an option for pregnant or breastfeeding women.
What are Belkyra treatments like?
Treatment is quick, like all other injectable services at Kitchener Waterloo Cosmetic Clinic. Your treatment begins with a consultation with Dr. Dawood and staff. Your skin is cleansed and prepared with topical anesthetic to provide for a comfortable treatment. Afterwards your skin is marked for accuracy. Finally, a quick series of injections are performed into the fatty area beneath the chin. Most patients are in the office for about an hour, but actual injection time is less than 10 minutes. No incisions, no stitches!
How much does a treatment cost?
Price depends on the severity of your submental fullness (double chin). Belkyra injections are a medical procedure, and treatment response varies. No guarantees can be made on the success of the procedure, and no refunds will be processed for “lack of results”.
What is Belkyra recovery like?
Most patients return to regular activities immediately post procedure. You should expect some swelling, tenderness, and bruising to the injection site for the first few days, and continued swelling for up to 2 weeks. Full results will take up to 4-8 weeks as your body needs time to process and metabolize the broken down fat cells.
How many Belkyra treatments are required?
Number of treatments vary and depend on the level of correction desired. It is common to see results with 2-4 treatment sessions, however some patients may need up to 6 or more treatments. Follow up appointments are scheduled 4 weeks post procedure, with re-treatments 4-12 weeks dependent on results.
Are Belkyra results permanent?
Results are indefinite as long as post-treatment guidelines are followed. Belkyra destroys fat cells, however with improper diet new cells can grow. Targeted fat cells are destroyed permanently. To ensure proper metabolism of fat cells we require no excessively fatty/greasy foods or alcohol intake for 2 weeks post procedure. Belkyra will destroy fat cells, but with poor health new cells can grow to replace them. Excessive weight gain post treatment will also reverse or mask results. Follow a healthy diet plan, and exercise to maintain results.
How is Belkyra Injected?
After your consultation with Dr. Dawood your treatments can either proceed the same day, or we will book you back for your in-office procedure.
We advise all patients to limit alcohol and anti-inflammatory medications and supplements for 1 week prior to treatment. If you are on prescription medications you should NOT stop these before talking to either Dr. Dawood or your regular treating physicians.
Most patients return to regular daily activities after treatment. Some patients will notice some bruising and redness post-procedure. The majority of patients will also experience swelling at the injection site. This is normal, and we usually suggest patients book their treatments at the end of the week so they have a few days at home for the swelling to settle a bit.
The actual treatment involves application of a topical numbing cream, the use of a marking grid to guide the injections, and then the actual injections which are very tolerable. Most patients experience minimal discomfort. The actual treatment time is 15 – 20 minutes, and start to finish patients are out of the office in less than an hour. Applying ice right after treatment helps with the swelling.
Most patients are scheduled for a follow-up appointment in 4 weeks to re-assess and re-treat if needed. Remember, most patients need an average of 2-6 total treatments. We advise all patients to PLAN and BUDGET for more treatments. Plan for 6, and if you only need 2 then great!
Belkyra or Liposuction?
Why get Belkyra when I can get liposuction? A question asked by many patients!
Belkyra is NON-SURGICAL. No knives, No scalpels. This makes Belkyra an excellent choice for reducing submental fat over traditional liposuction or other surgical procedures. There are obviously some patients that are a better fit for surgery, however we advise all patients interested in treating submental fat (double chin) to visit us for a consultation to determine if Belkyra would be an alternative way to avoid the risks of surgery.
Results are not instant with Belkyra, and multiple treatments are typically needed. This is the case with any procedure, however, including surgical ones which can have extensive recovery periods. Liposuction also involves the use of a compression device and headgear, which results in extensive downtime for patients. With Belkyra the downtime is minimal with only a few days of swelling.
At your consultation appointment our staff and Dr. Dawood will determine if you are a candidate for Belkyra, and if so will proceed with treatment the same day if it is your desire.
