Effective Treatment for Chronic Migraines
Chronic Migraines can be debilitating. For the right patient, Botox may help. Botox treatments for Chronic Migraines can work, are done in a medical office and are sometimes covered partially by private insurance (patient is responsible for checking with their insurance/ injection fee non-reimbursable and not typically insurance covered).
During treatment, a small needle injects small amounts of Botox into the scalp muscles. Botox works to induce relaxation of the muscle to help reduce intensity and frequency of migraines.
Technically any patient suffering from migraines may benefit, but typically it is used in patients suffering from chronic migraines (many days of the month), that are negatively affecting day to day life, and who have failed trials of several prescribed medications.
If you have already tried medications with your doctor, and want to try Botox for Chronic migraines, consider giving us call for more information and to see if you are a candidate.

How does Botox for Migraines Work?
Botox is an approved treatment for Chronic Migraines by both Health Canada and the FDA. By injecting small amounts of botox into the muscles of the forehead and scalp underarms, we try to control the source of migraine type symptoms and pains. Research shows this is a safe and effective way of controlling migraines, for the right patient.
Botox is a prophylactic (preventative) treatment for headaches in adults with chronic migraines, that suffer with headaches for 15 days or more per month, where the headaches last 4 or more hours. Prophylactic means the goal is to reduce the number of headaches per month, and the length of the headaches. Treatments last up to 3 months.
Treatments are performed by Dr. Rayhaan Dawood after an initial consultation. The actual procedure is very safe and straightforward and will take less than an 15 minutes. A very fine needle is used to inject small amounts of Botox into the treatment area. After treatment, you should hopefully notice a reduction in the intensity and frequency of headaches per month.
Treatment Areas with Botox
Botox for migraines is injected into several places in the forehead and scalp to try to relax muscle and treat migraines.
How Long Does Botox Last?
Treatment should last for 3 months. Some patients metabolize Botox faster, and some slower. Repeat treatments are required for ongoing migraine prevention.
Botox for Migraines – Health Canada and FDA Approved
Botox is an approved therapy for the treatment of Chronic Migraines in patients suffering from migraines 15+ days per month, with a duration lasting 4 hours or more per day. Chronic Migraines affect many Canadians, causing job loss, decreased functioning, anxiety, and other medical issues.
At the Kitchener Waterloo Cosmetic Clinic we have treated many patients in the Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, and Guelph region for this debilitating condition.
The cause of migraines is not entirely known, but there are many theories. What has been found is that some patients respond to various medications, while others do not.
Many patients come to us after suffering for years with migraines, having failed treatment with various medications.
Any Downtime with Botox?
There is minimal downtime day of and after treatment with minor swelling, and some mild discomfort. Most patients notice results in 5-7 days, with full effect by 2-4 weeks.
How many units of Botox do I need? What is the cost of the procedure?
It is impossible to say without a consultation with one of our staff. We encourage anyone interested and ready for treatment to book an appointment with our office. Initial consult to discuss your medical condition is OHIP covered with a valid health card ($100 without valid card). Actual injections are not covered and a $250 injection fee applies PLUS the cost of the Botox Medication. Please call our office to inquire further as to the process. Often the cost of the Botox itself will be covered in part by third party medical insurance, however, this will not cover the injection fee our office charges.
Who is Botox for?
You must suffer with migraines for 15 days or more per month, with migraines lasting 4 or more hours. This is a Health Canada requirement.
Your insurance company may have other requirements for coverage of the Botox Medication. This will vary and is ultimately your responsibility to verify. We make no guarantees as we do not directly bill or deal with your insurance company other than providing any medical information that is needed.
At Kitchener Waterloo Cosmetic Clinic, all injectable based treatments are done personally by Dr. Rayhaan Dawood MD. CCFP.

Is this treatment covered by OHIP or my drug plan?
Your initial assessment is covered by OHIP ($100 if you do not have valid OHIP). The BOTOX® medication is typically covered by the majority of private drug plans, however it is up to the patient to speak to their own insurance provider and our office does not hold any responsibility if they do not cover the cost.
There will also be an additional injection fee our office charges to do the injections, your insurance will not reimburse this cost to you.
Botox has also been used on and off label for many other conditions temperomandibular joint (TMJ) pain, and Bruxism (teeth grinding) and hyperhidrosis are all other indications we are able to treat with Botox.
Treatment Process:
After your initial consultation you will be schedule for a treatment appointment OR treatment will be done same day if time permits. The treatment area is identified and, if necessary, anesthetized using topical anesthetic cream/ointment, the BOTOX Medication is prepared and then injected just beneath the skin using a very fine needle. Once under the skin, the BOTOX works by blocking the signals and chemicals that stimulate your body to produce sweat at the targeted area. The sweat glands down-regulate and produce LESS sweat. The goal is to reduce sweat to a level that a normal person creates.
For the next few months, you will have reduced sweat production. Restore confidence and self-esteem, reduce anxiety, embarrassment, and stop excess sweating from negatively affecting your lifestyle.
