Keloids
A keloid scar is a thick raised scar. It can occur wherever you have a skin injury on your body, but usually forms on earlobes, shoulders, cheeks or the chest. If you’re prone to developing keloids, you might get them in more than one place. A keloid scar isn’t harmful to your physical health, but it can cause emotional distress.
Keloid scar treatment is usually always possible. If you don’t like how your keloid looks or feels, talk with a doctor about how to flatten or remove it. At KW Cosmetic Clinic we have helped many patients treat their keloids.
Keloid Symptoms
A keloid scar may form within months to years of the inciting injury, sometimes they can appear even more rapidly. Signs and symptoms might include:
- Thick, irregular scarring, typically on the earlobes, shoulders, cheeks or middle chest
- Shiny, hairless, lumpy, raised skin
- Varied size, depending on the size of the original injury and when the keloid stops growing
- Varied texture, from soft to firm and rubbery
- Reddish, brown or purplish, depending on your skin color
- Itchiness
- Discomfort
When to see a doctor
Early treatment can significantly help minimize growth of a keloid. You should talk with a doctor soon after you notice a keloid. If you want to treat one that you’ve had for a while, talk with a doctor who specializes in skin conditions.
Hypertrophic Scars
A hypertrophic scar is a very thick and raised scar that unfortunately is an abnormal response to wound healing. They can occur anywhere there is skin but commonly in very tight skin areas including traumatized damage skin after a surgical incision or burn. Treatment includes corticosteroid injection and other methods.
Normally wounds should heal normally, but sometimes as the skin heals your body abnormally responds by making too much thick collagen. This thick collagen takes the appearance of the hypertrophic scar, which has a raised and unsightly appearance.
What’s the difference between a hypertrophic scar and a keloid scar?
While keloids and hypertrophic scars can be similar they are different in the amount of spread. Hypertrophic scars tend to stay within the boundaries of the original wound whereas keloid scars spread due to excessive extra tissue.
Corticosteroids – Kenalog
Keloids and Hypertrophic scars can be treated primarily with injection based treatments. At KW Cosmetic Clinic these cosmetic scars can be injected and then have topical steroid layered superficially to help keloids and hypertrophic scars flatten, heal, and reduce their unsightly appearance.
Triamcinolone acetonide suspension (Kenalog) 10 to 40 mg per mL (depending on the site) is injected intralesionally, which, although painful, will eventually flatten 50 to 100 percent of keloids. Patients may require multiple treatments to see desired results.
